In March of 2015,  a Liaoning (遼寧 China) peasant Wang Cheng De (王承德 ) had dug up a 70 Kg. “Real Grand Duke”– a rare type of mushroom that is supposedly has many medicinal applications according to ancient Chinese medicine texts.  He had sold the mushroom for RMB$ 3 million (US$500k).

Unlike other people with sudden riches, Wang did not spend his new found fortune on luxuries nor speculate on stock market.  Instead, he had invested RMB$1.5 million to build a vacation resort, RMB$260k on 50 donkeys, RMB$180k on a new car, the rest of the money is invested on a fish pond to raise fishes and ducks.

Wang is a typical industrious peasant who likes to work.

In the summer of 2017, a giant flood had destroyed Wang’s resort and fish pond.  His fishes and ducks were disappeared in a flash.  Wang did not even have a place to stay but to live on his tree house.  His capital equipment is gone and with no funding source.

Wang had fallen in depression.  He did some soul searching and reflection in the tree house.  He had decided to sell his remaining herds of about 40 donkeys at cost and raised RMB$200k.

He used the money to buy some pigs and raise them in the donkey stables.  He also bought 2000 chicklings to raise them up as “free range chickens“.  At the same time he formed a co-op for cultivating mushrooms.

Wang once again is full of hope for his future.  He said by next year at around this time, he will have 10k free range chickens and a rebuilt fish pond.

He is unfazed by the wrath of Grand Duke.

POSTSCRIPT:  THE MANY FACES OF GRAND DUKE

Grand Duke comes in many forms.  Grand Duke can represent a direction not to be disturbed in Feng Shui or a time marker that may clash the birth year of some people.

The “Grand Duke” here is one type of Ganoderma or 肉靈芝 in Chinese.  Because of its rarity, it is enshrined with many mysterious medicinal functions.

According to traditional belief, this Grand Duke mushroom should not be touched or moved except for saving life【太歲勿動除非用作藥材救人】.  When discovered, Grand Duke mushroom is enshrined and worshiped.

According to legend, Grand Duke mushroom is the guardian spirit of the land.  If it is removed, the land in which it resides will lose its “earth energy“.  The pictures below are different variations of the Grand Duke mushroom.

This article is an analysis of the age distribution of the deceased victims of Las Vegas mass shooting.  The objective is to check if certain age numbers tend to show up more than others.  In other words, certain numbers are less auspicious or not as fortunate than others.  Hopefully the finding may help people to improve their safety planning for their future activities.

BELIEF OR SUPERSTITION IN NUMBERS

In most western cultures, the number “7” is a lucky number whereas in China, seven is associated with death rituals.

The 4-leaf cover is a symbol of luck in at least the Irish culture.  The number four sounds like “death” in Chinese and is often avoided like by eliminating the 4th/ 14th/ 24th/ 34th/ 44th floor in a building or street address.

The number six sounds like “official wealth” in Chinese and hence considered auspicious.  However, the number “666” is dreaded by western cultures.

The number that is most adored by the Chinese is the number “8”.  “Eight” sounds like “prosperity” or “getting rich” in Chinese.  Chinese likes to bid on anything — car license plate, street or apartment number that contains the number eight.  Eight is considered the luckiest number by the Chinese.

The number “nine” sounds like “forever” or “lasting” in Chinese.  So it well received by the Chinese.  However, zero is the beginning of the number journey and”nine” is the last digit and final destination.  “Nine” is sometimes treated as a major “hurdle” for reaching another 10 years of life expectancy by Chinese astrology readers.

TESTING METHODOLOGY

Age distribution of Las Vegas victims is tabulated and percentages are calculated.  Because the nature of the event (country music concert) in the incident tends to attract certain age groups, only the last digit of victim’s age number is used for calculation.  This may eliminate the age-groups bias.  See the table below:

DATA ANALYSIS

With a total of 58 cases and 10 digits (0- 9), the average is 5.8.  So theoretically, each number should show up five to six times.  Therefore, if there are 5- 6 cases or around 10% for a number, this number is pretty “neutral” or neither auspicious nor inauspicious.  Hence, the green rows with age digit number 1, 2 and 6 in table above are “neutral”.

The rows in red color are below 7% mean fewer people died with these age digit numbers.  This means number 3, 7 and 9 are more auspicious, especially number “7” with only one case.  This indeed provides strong support on the western belief that number “7” is relatively lucky.

The rows with bold black entries have over 13% frequency.  Number “4” has 12 cases or 20.7%– the highest frequency in the data.  Even the gunman has the number “4” in his current age of 64. This supports the Chinese belief that number “4” is inauspicious.  A shocking number is age “34” which shows up 7 times– the highest exact age number frequency in this data set.  Age 34 probably is a year that people should be vigilant in planning for travels and events.

The biggest surprise is number “8” with a pretty high frequency of 8 cases or 13.8%.  This disputes the Chinese belief that number 8 is very auspicious.  Another shocking number is exact age number “28” which shows up 6 times– the second highest frequency in this data set.  Age 28 probably is also a year that people should be vigilant in planning for travels and events too.

Another surprise is the number “zero” with the second highest frequency of 9 cases or 15.5%.  We expect that the number “9” should have higher frequency than the number “zero” because “9” is the end of the number journey.  But “zero” has much higher frequency.  Hence, people with age number ending with “0” should be vigilant in that year. This also disproves the Chinese belief that “10” is “completion” and “perfection“, especially in certain Feng Shui schools.

CONCLUSION

Based on the data from Las Vegas mass shooting and perhaps any unexpected mass catastrophe,  the most dangerous age numbers are when one’s age number ends with the number “four“, followed by “zero” and “eight“.  The most dangerous ages in this Las Vegas group are 28 and 34.  People with any of these age characteristics should plan the activities with more security options accordingly.

RIP Deceased victims of Las Vegas

buildingWhen doing Feng Shui audit, the most critical part is figuring out the “facing” and “sitting” of the house because this determines the energy distribution within the property.

“Sitting” is also called “mountain” in Feng Shui terms.  This obviously implying the “back” of the house.  “Facing” is the angle measured based on the “sitting” of the house.

However, how to define “facing” and “sitting” is not this simple.  The topic remains a “hot potato” in Feng Shui circle.

Approaches to facing and sitting:

  • Using door location as facing– the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  • Using mountain or back-support (buildings at the back) to determine facing– door location may not be the opposite side of mountain.
  • Using the “yang-est” side like big open space or ocean or the side with most street traffic as facing– even the door may be at the back of this “facing”.
  • For Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Feng Shui (non-divination type)– door location is very flexible and can be located in any trigram or palace.

For multiple storeys building with multiple tenants:

  1. Using the main entrance of the building as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting— all the units/ apartments will use the same sitting/ facing.
  2. Using the main door location of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  3. Using the “yang-est” side (side with most windows/ balcony) of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite side will be the sitting.
  4. Combination of #1 and 3 with this rule:  For storeys 1 to X (“X” usually is10+) storey, use rule #1 and after “Xth” storey, use rule #2.  The rationale is “Xth” below storeys will be more affected by earth energy and “Xth” above will be affected more by “heaven” or star energy.

There are numerous arguments on which method is more “correct” using how “qi” or energy travels and moves around a house.  For example, the argument against using the yang-est side of a highrise apartment as facing:  qi must be carried by people into the apartment.  People walk through building main entrance, take the elevator and walk to their apartment door.  They do not and cannot walk into their apartment through the balcony high above ground.

I have deliberately skipped the argument on whether “facing” OR “sitting” is more important to keep this short.

Regardless of the arguments, most schools think their method is the best!  This is why if you hire Feng Shui practitioners from different schools, you may get totally opposite readings if facing/ sitting measurement methods are different.

The term “ghost-gate” (鬼门) exists long before the term “Feng Shui” was coined.  You can find this term in the ancient text of Yi-jing.

Ancient text claims that “ghost-gate” is in northeast or Gen trigram, where spirits or ghosts entering or leaving.  Ancient people like to build temples on this location to facilitate spiritual communications.

Modern views do not think ghost-gate is really ghost-ridden, but the energy here is very “yin“.

There are two types of ghost-gate line.  The line at the center of northeast region (Gen trigram) is called “outward ghost-gate line表鬼门. The other one at the southwest (Kun trigram) is called “inner ghost-gate line里鬼门.

These two angles have the most “yin” energy within 360 degrees.

In terms of Feng Shui, doors, toilet seat, stove, fridge, air-conditioner, washing machine, hi-fi, TV, wealth position……, should not be placed on this ghost-gate line.  Inauspicious events or misfortune may happen if items with movements are placed on these ghost-gate lines.

Negative events will happen to male owner mostly if outward ghost-gate line is violated and to woman owner if inner ghost-gate line is provoked.

Negative effects will be more severe if main door sits on ghost-gate line.  It will be the worst if this door is also facing a T-junction or other form-sha energy like a “sickle sha” or “heart-piercing sha“.

Below is a list of inauspicious Feng Shui images that you do not want to see upon entering one’s house or at the door.stairway

  1. Greet by a wall— may cause obstacles in life and declining luck
  2. See a mirror— deflects away good energies coming into the house and absorbs negative energies into the house
  3. See a toilet—  greeting guest with foul energy; attracting bickering and disharmony among family members
  4. See a stairway—  leaking energy and wealth
  5. See bedroom—  attracting lust and affairs
  6. See the kitchen— causing lawsuits, wealth losses and hot temper
  7. Walks under heavy beam over the door—  disunity among family members and dwindling luck
  8. See the balcony through the door— leaking qi or energy, hurting people and failure to accumulate wealth and keep people in the family
  9. See 3 doors in a straight line—  “sword piercing heart sha” that hurts people and loses wealth
  10. See piles of shoes/ garbage— negative qi suppresses residents’ luck; difficult life for the residents and attracting “mean people” or backstabbers.
  11. See objects like knife, sword, gun, tiger, snake and etc.— unsettling family with bloody events and lawsuits

Most of the above are under traditional Form Feng Shui area.  Consult a Feng Shui practitioner for remedy or take this course:

I have just read an article about earth’s shifting magnetic pole affecting the runway labels of Boeing airfield.

http://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/pilots-check-your-bearings-boeing-field-catches-up-with-earths-magnetic-field/

This article quotes NASA, “.… the magnetic north pole has crept northward by more than 600 miles since the early 19th century and is currently migrating northward about 40 miles per year.  When the magnetic poles shift more than five degrees, the rounded numbers used to designate runways need to be changed.

This natural phenomenon also affects Feng Shui measurements because Feng Shui formula (li-qi) depends on magnetic field.

If your house is sitting around the middle of a “mountain” (15 degrees region), shifting 1 or 2 degrees may not change the Feng Shui conditions much.  But if the house is within 2.5 degrees to the borderline of a mountain, it could fall into the “replacement star” region and even worse, small void line and even big void line (depending on the mountain).  Read the following blog articles for what happens if your house sits on a void line.

Therefore, one should have a new Feng Shui audit once every few years or at least do another magnetic measurement, to make sure your house does not fall into a void line. Read the following link of my void line articles for what happens if your house sits on a void line and other factors that may push your house into a void line other than earth’s shifting magnetic pole.
