Note:  Below are some questions from “4P Bootcamp” discussion group.

Is the age in which the luck pillar changes Chinese age or western age?

It is based on solar calendar.  To calculate the first 10-years-luck (10YL), yang male/ yin female (based on birth year) count the number of days and hour from birthday/hour to next solar terms (3 days= 1yr, 1 Chinese hour= 10 days).  Yin male and yang female count the number of days and hour from birthday/hour BACKWARD to previous solar terms.  For detail calculation, consult your basic Bazi textbooks.

Some say Chinese and others say western (age). That can make a significant difference sometimes.

It is always presented using the stem of the first year of one’s10YL.  For example, my 10YL starts at every jia-year…..  This confusion is due to the way traditional Chinese method of counting age is different from westerners.  Chinese baby is already one year old when s/he is born.  Hence in some Chinese Bazi software, the year daymaster (DM) clashing Grand Duke is 12x+ 1 whereas Bazi software written by westerners is 12x.  Chinese way of counting the age of a dead person is even more bizarre– the dead guy gets 3 bonus years– one year each from heaven, earth and himself.  So if a person is dead at 68, his reported age of death would be 71 by the funeral home.

In the year of change, if it happens to be in the middle of the year, do the old/new pillar switch off/on or there’s a mixing of energy for the whole year?

You separate the year, so you may have half a year in the old 10YL and another half in new 10YL.

When 10YL switches, good or bad things are likely to happen, especially if the switch is from one region to another or “changing corner luck” (from hot to dry, for example, from wei to shen (fire to metal region)– if the new region is favorable (great!), if unfavorable (pray or take my “Destiny and Luck” course)

Events are more likely to happen in the beginning or end of a 10YL.  There is a saying about 10YL, “男怕交运,女怕脱运. Male is afraid of changing 10YL.  Female is afraid of the end of a 10YL.”

How soon will the new luck pillar be felt before the actual change takes place especially corner luck?

This is hard to say, but it is pretty common to see someone suddenly dies/suffers major mishaps or become filthy rich/ famous overnight when the annual luck or 10YL switches.   10YL is the “big environment“.  Annual luck is the trigger.  Activation depends on, I guess, the differentials in strength between favorable/unfavorable elements.  If there is an overwhelming imbalance and/or 3+ branches got clashed, events may happen faster.

Checking the year of luck period switching is one way of looking for “actions” or possible fortune/ misfortune event that may happen.

Note:  The follow excerpt is taken from the chapter “Peach Blossom or Negative Romance” in “4-Pillars Bootcamp” video correspondence course.

Peach blossom stars normally have negative connotation in 4P.  There are two major characteristics of peach blossom stars:affair

  • It is associated with sexual desire and alcohol
  • It is associated with indiscriminate spending

PEACH BLOSSOM STAR

The meaning of peach blossom star is identical to the “bath” stage of the “12 life stages” in Chinese metaphysics.  The second stage of luck of “12 life stages” is “bath”.  The original meaning of “bath” is that after day-master (DM, the principal of a birth chart) was born, s/he needs to take a bath everyday.  When one baths, s/he needs to undress.  So the meaning of “bath” is extended to mean “peach blossom”.  It has the connotation of being lustful.  But nowadays peach blossom also means positive or negative romance luck.

How to locate peach blossom in a 4P chart

To find if a DM has peach blossom, we use DM’s animal sign or year branch to check against the following table:

Year branch: Animal sign: Hai/ mao/ wei

Pig/ rabbit/ goat

Yin/ wu/ xu

Tiger/ horse/ dog

Si/ you/ chou

Snake/   rooster/ ox

Shen/ zi/ chen

Monkey/ rat/ dragon

Peach blossom

(branch of Month/ day/ hour)

Zi

Rat

Mao

Rabbit

Wu

Horse

You

Rooster

Month branch peach blossom is the strongest.  Please note that the idea of peach blossom star is just for reference.  It does not necessarily mean a person with peach blossom star will be lustful and wasteful.  Similarly, a person without peach blossom star can also be a lustful person.  We should check peach blossom with other stars within a chart before making any judgment.  Modern interpretation of peach blossom includes “sociability” or being popular among people.

Male peach blossom star

In terms of 4P, wealth stars (zheng-cai/ pian-cai) are considered the main peach blossom star and output star (shi-shen/ shang-guan) as the source of peach blossom.

Wealth star is the “wife star” for male and can also be seen as “star of desire”.  Output star produces wealth star, so output star can be seen as “desire promoter”.

When output stars are strong with wealth star combines with other star, day-master’s probability of running into romance or affair will be high.

So, you may ask, between wealth star and peach blossom star, which one is more powerful in bringing romance to a DM?

A wealth star without clashes or damages is more powerful, even if he has no peach blossom star in his chart.

Normally or morally speaking, peach blossom is negative when DM is married and acceptable or even positive if DM is unmarried.

The following are basic rules to make prediction about male peach blossom:

  •   When DM’s chart has output stars (shi-shen/ shang-guan) and wealth stars (zheng-cai/ pian-cai) and runs into output and wealth luck pillar, he is likely running into peach blossom (romance or affair).
  •    Male 4P chart with too much fire and parched earth but little or no water to cool down, its DM is likely running into peach blossom (romance or affair).
  •    DM is surrounded by wealth stars (any wealth star) and the chart also has output stars, DM is likely running into peach blossom (romance or affair).
  •   When a male 4P chart has two or more wealth stars combine with DM or day pillar, and the chart also has output stars, DM is likely running into peach blossom (romance or affair).

Recently a student wants to know if my “4-Pillars Bootcamp+” course covers “life expectancy” topic.

Here is my answer, “The topic is not covered directly. It is hidden under the chapter on health and sickness.  I
don’t want students to scare people predicting when they will die.  A few weeks ago I have written about how modern technology screws up Bazi’s/4P predictions of death in the 4P-Bootcamp discussion list.  Many sickness that were once not curable 40- 50 years ago are now ‘easy fixes'”.

The student has replied, “But let me be more precise what I’m looking for. In the book ‘Sanming Tonghui’  book 7, the chapter 4 is about: ‘analysis of long lives and early deaths’. I saw that referenced in another book, but I neither have that ancient book nor could I read it as it is in Chinese. Do you maybe have that translated somewhere ? Or the approach referenced or explained ?” (Note: “San-ming Tong-hui” is a 4P classic written in Ming Dynasty or 1700’s)

I have checked this ancient book.  It has only a few pages on the topic.  The author had referenced other books of the time (1700’s) using non-standard methods such as na-yin of the year pillar.  No wonder it is not referenced much in modern 4P literature because it is not logical.

4P view of long life and few sickness is pretty simple:  When a 4P chart has all the five elements and the flow of qi is smooth, the person will likely live a long life.  Of course, this does not take into consideration the effects of karma debts and other factors like geographical locations, which may explain why people with the same birthday live different destiny and died earlier or later.

People with lots of clashes and penalties in their 4P charts are likely to die prematurely.  People with strong day-masters are likely to die outdoor (accidents) and weak day-masters are likely to die indoor (sickness).

This student wrote back. “I’d be interested not in an event based ‘when which things will happen’ approach but in addition to that something more to the point of life expectancy.

In the last few years I had 2 friends who survived a heart attack due to modern emergency medicine. However, 3 month later they died from a completely different, but terminal disease.

Another friend also had a heart attack with temporary death and already survived for a long time.

I believe that the length of life is somehow predetermined and if it is your time to go, it is your time to go. You can only extend it by a rather small time (like the first 2 friends I’m referring to)

Yes, when it is your time to go, you can’t escape.  There are many stories in Buddhist literature about people who were supposed to die young but not– because of the good deeds they have done.

If you can share with me as a bonus how to at least roughly determine the life expectancy, that would be much appreciated ?” The student asked.

This is probably not necessary.  Life expectancy is the underlying implication on every 4p reading.  You just look for years when “things” will happen.  This includes death.  But a responsible 4P reader will not say “death” but “hurdle” or “major obstacle in life”.  So as not to incapacitate or scare the client to death and make it into a self-fulfilling prophecy.  After all, 4P is not 100% accurate (or it is a science and not metaphysics).  A good 4P reader is to make negative predictions “inaccurate” by steering his clients away from the energies that will make negative predictions happen (this is what my “Destiny and Luck Management” course does mostly).

Birth chart is like your “pre-heaven” blueprint that may not necessarily materialized completely as planned.  4P reader has no control on what you will do with your life (and affects the original blueprint).

Years ago I had a strange business idea of advising life insurance companies to examine insurance policies based on 4P check of likelihood to die young. They will take only people who will be likely to live long and rarely get sick, so that the company can offer good pricing to them.  But this is “discrimination” and cannot be practiced in USA.

I would like to quote a famous Chinese saying to end this discussion:

How can one understand death when living is still a mystery?” (, )

There are no commonly agreed translations of 4P terms. Different schools or teachers translate 4P terms according to his/her personal preferences. There are three major rules used in translations:

  1. Literal translations: This simply gives a faithful and very often, horrible (in terms of culture shock) translations of the terms. For examples, “shi-shen” is translated as “eating god”, “qi-sha” becomes “7-killings”, “shang-guan” becomes “hurting officials or officers” and the likes. Problem with literal translations is that it may bias students’ perception towards certain terms as “bad” because it sounds horrible. In reality, every one of the “10 gods” or ‘transformation stars” (my terminology) can be positive or negative depending on the composition of the 4P chart. Another common misconception is the ubiquitous uses of the term “god” in 4P, like “useful god” (yong shen), “enmity god” (chou shen) and the like, making 4P sound “religious” when it is actually more statistical in nature.
  1. Pin-yin translations: This gives a transliteration of the 4P terms like “shi-shen”, “zheng-guan” and etc. It takes some time to get used to these foreign terms. But it is great when you go back to the original Chinese texts or switching teachers/school.
  1. Translation based on interpreted meanings: This translates the 4P terms based on the understanding of the translator. For example, shi-shen and shang-guan are translated as “output” stars. But different people have different understanding of the terms, so the translations can sometimes be confusing and shocking as well. Good translations under this should be “value-free” or NOT “value-laden”. It should also give meanings that are faithful or close to the original meanings of the terms. The translated terms should not influence the perception of the readers and students.
  1. Mixing of all of the above

The following examples are the common translations of 4P’s “10 gods” or “transformation stars”:

4P TERMS: 10 GODS OR TRANSFORMATION STARS TRANSLATIONS

1. Jie-cai 劫财

  • Ken: JC, +peer (“+” stands for polarity “yang”)
  • Others: rob wealth, competitor, unfriendly parallel, contender-star, unfriendly partner

Bi-jian 比肩

  • Ken: BJ, -peer (“-” stands for polarity “yin”)
  • Others: friend, colleague, unfriendly parallel, friend-star, friendly buddy

Zheng–cai 正财

  • Ken: ZC, +weatlh
  • Others: direct wealth, income, regular weatlh, proper wealth, main income, expected wealth, wife-star

Pian-cai 偏财

  • Ken: PC, –wealth
  • Others: indirect wealth, wealth, unbecoming wealth, unexpected wealth, unexpected property, windfall star, godsend wealth, unexpected possession

Zheng-yin 正印

  • Ken: ZY, +resource
  • Others: direct resource, resource/education, proper resource, main funds, proper care, mother-star, willingly nourished

Pian-yin 偏印

  • Ken: PY, –resource
  • Others: indirect resource, resource/education, unbecoming resource, unexpected funds, unbecoming care, guardian star, unwillingly nourished

Shang-guan

  • Ken: SG, +output
  • Others: hurting officer, intelligence/aspirations, drastic ouput, actor-star, offending-star, harsh output

Shi-shen 食神

  • Ken: SS, –output
  • Others: eating god, intelligence/aspirations, gracious output, artist-star, food-star, emotional IQ

Zheng-guan 正官

  • Ken: ZG, +power
  • Others: direct officer, power/status, proper power, discipline, angel star, the obedience

Qi-sha 七杀

  • Ken: QS, –power
  • Others: 7-killings, power/status, unbecoming power, unbecoming discipline, evil star, the stern

My personal bias is trying to make the translated terms as neutral as possible, so as not influencing the reader’s perception. Each of these 10 “stars” or “gods” can be positive or negative depending on the combination of the natal chart and luck periods.

I do not mean other translations are not as “good” or “horrible” as mine. Translations reflect the worldviews, command of the Chinese language and mental conditions of the translators.

“4-Pillars Forecasting Bootcamp” with 12 hr. video

I was in Mexico City teaching “4-Pillars Bootcamp” last weekend.

Owning to the summer tourist season, the only hotel room that I can get is located at San Sha and 5-yellow disaster direction!

The first two nights I had dreams of long-deceased relatives and a grad-school classmate. I rarely dreamed of deceased people and let alone dreaming of them 2 nights in a row.

The third night, before going to bed, I saw a 5-inches big black moth on the window edge.

Chinese believe that their deceased relatives, especially the newly deceased, come back in the form of flying insects like butterflies and moths, to visit their love ones.

I was worried if anything happened to my own family members due to the dreams about dead people and especially this mysterious appearance of a black moth.

I have called my relatives in the states and Hong Kong. They are all safe and sound.

So I have called a Mexican friend about the symbolic meaning of black moth to them.

Black moth or butterfly flying into your house means bad luck or even the death of a family member. We normally catch and burn it to avoid bad luck.” My amigo said.

I can’t burn my mama! The black moth could be her visiting me– though it is a long flight for her to fly from Hong Kong to Mexico City!” Said I.

To prevent some worrisome amigos from burning this black moth, I have captured it with a plastic bag and release it outside the hotel.

The next day, which happened to be the second day of the “4P Boot-camp” seminar, something unexpected happened.

At the end of the day, a new student come into the class! This is very unusual for someone to join a class when 66% of the class was already done. It can also be the good work of Monica, my local organizer.

This “unexpected income” means 10 tanks of gas for my car!

The following evening, I found the same black moth at my door edge! This became very freaky to me. Is this really my deceased mother visiting me? I must have been a bad boy lately.

Anyway, to avoid the black moth being killed, I telepathically told it, “Hi amigo! Go away if you don’t want to be a roasted moth!” Then I have used a stick to drive it away. It has disappeared ever since.

To my Mexican amigas and amigos who are reading this, I cannot guarantee you getting 10 tanks of gas when you set free a black moth or butterfly. But letting the “bad luck” or butterfly/ moth fly away is much better than burning the “bad luck” in your house!

It is bad karma to kill any living being, especially those who do no harm to you. On the other hand, one kind deed can potentially mean the difference between going to heaven or hell! There are stories in Buddhist literature about some people who had escaped hell due to one simple random act of kindness to a small animal or insect.

Adiós!
