QMDJ

rotatingBaguaIn the last few years, some people market courses which they claim are Fa-Qi-Men-Dun-Jia or “Spiritual QMDJ”.  My students have asked me if they are “real” or “not too real“.

I could not judge if these spiritual QMDJ materials are “real” or “not real” because I have not seen these materials.  But from the approach that these materials are marketed, we can make some “educated” deductions.

Unlike traditional Chinese metaphysics subjects like Bazi and Feng Shui, which do not require supernatural power and/ or divine authorizations, both Spiritual QMDJ and Daoist Miao-Shan techniques involve numerous chants, offerings, incenses, ritual papers, ritual declarations/ summons/ contracts, talismans, hand gestures and steps or walk formations.  These chants are mostly ancient and are difficult to translate into modern Chinese (even more difficult to translate into English if the translator is not well-versed in classical Chinese!).   These practices are likely requiring spiritual membership and vows in that particular sect or school. Unauthorized practices of these rituals or techniques may bring misfortune or even mental illness to the users.

Spiritual QMDJ is more susceptible to marketing fraud as it is not difficult to mix Daoist Mao-Shan magical rituals into QMDJ.  Mao-Shan Fa-shu 茅山法术 is well-known for its magical rituals, but it is not QMDJ.  There are over 3600 of this so-called Spiritual QMDJ practices in the Chinese-speaking market which are more Mao-Shan magical rituals than QMDJ.

A simple way to spot out “not so real Spiritual QMDJ” is that teachers of authentic spiritual QMDJ will NOT automatically take in any student unseen even if the later pays a large sum of “tuition“.  For teachers of spiritual subjects, taking in a student or disciple is like choosing a marriage partner.    They are more concerned with the Bazi chart and moral character of the potential disciple.  This is to keep the likelihood of misusing spiritual knowledge to a minimum and protecting the reputation of the teacher.  Any abuses of spiritual knowledge like spiritual QMDJ by students will be counted towards the karma credit account of their teachers.  This is the major rationale behind of not taking everyone who pays as a Spiritual QMDJ student.

daoistAccording to traditional belief, people who use spiritual or magical practices to hurt others or for unfair advantages or illegal gains will be subjected to karmic retribution or punishment.   Selling or marketing divine or deity power is a taboo in traditional Chinese metaphysics.  The common karmic retributions are:

  • desolate
  • premature death
  • poverty
  • disability

Any “master” who takes in a few hundred spiritual QMDJ students at a time does not match the profile of a traditional spiritual QMDJ master but a successful marketeer.  The question of whether these spiritual QMDJ courses are real or not real does not really matter if the transmitter of spiritual knowledge does not follow traditional practices.  In this scenario, even the “real thing” is rendered into “not so real“.

The main theory for Chinese metaphysics is yin-yang theory.  Hence, ordinary people called practitioners of Feng Shui, Bazi, fortune-telling, divination, QMDJ, ZWDS and the like “yin-yang teachers“.

According to ancient observations of life histories of yin-yang teachers, they had found this people do not enjoy the “complete” life of ordinary people.   It is attributed to these metaphysics people have “leaked” too many “heaven’s secrets天机”.  Heaven in turn punishes them in some aspects of their life.

Below are common ways that yin-yang teachers suffer in life:

5-DETRIMENTS

  1. Widower 鳏 —  man with no wife or wife passed prematurely; or simply live alone
  2. Widow 寡 —  woman’s husband had passed and never remarried
  3. Orphan 孤 —  a person’s father died early or both parents passed
  4. Childless 独 — childless or no children during old age
  5. Handicap 残  — certain disability in the body

3-SHORTAGES

  • Money 钱 — person lives in poverty
  • Life expectancy 命– person does not live long
  • Power 权 — person does not have power.

Some metaphysics works are more “dangerous” than others.  Techniques like Fa-QMDJ (Magical QMDJ) and talismans that involves deities and ghosts are risky.  It is a taboo to use deities to make money.

Fa/ magic-related Daoist studies usually are very strict and selective on enrollment.  They will not take you simply because you give them $20k.  The teachers worries about the karma retribution of teaching the “fa” to the wrong person.  They care more about the integrity and character of the candidate.

Some teachers even require the potential student to take a “poison vow” to make sure s/he will not use the “fa” for money-grabs or betraying their teachers.  The vow usually consists of 3 choice of consequence:

  1. Handicap 残
  2. Poverty
  3. Widower 鳏 / Widow 寡

Modern response to these detriments are doing charity work and donate a certain percentage of metaphysics income to charity.

QMDJ becomes popular since 2005.  A QMDJ chart has over 50 data points and 6+ dimensions.  It can virtually replace many Chinese metaphysical methods.  The disadvantage is: QMDJ is not easy to master with numerous formula and combinations, not to mention the steep costs associated with learning it.

Like any “popular” method, people tend to use QMDJ as the “Swiss army knife” and try to do everything with it– whether it is an “overkill” or appropriate or not.  You don’t need to learn complicated QMDJ system when a simple and easy to learn Yi-jing or Plum-flower divination is suffice.  One does not need a cannon to kill a fly.

In this post, I will limit the discussion on QMDJ Feng Shui (QMDJ-FS) and QMDJ Divination Feng Shui (QMDJ-DFS).

Both QMDJ-FS and QMDJ-DFS are based on QMDJ charts though their total number reference charts are different.  A table below would highlight their differences in a flash:

PROPERTIES QMDJ Feng Shui QMDJ Divination FS
Reference charts 432 1080
San Yuan/ 3 cycles Yes, 3 x 60 yrs. No
9 Periods Yes, 20 yrs. each No
Measure house-facing Yes No
Measure door-facing Yes No
On-site measurement Yes No, divination-based
Replicable results Yes Highly unlikely
Chart selection based on: On-site measure 1. hour chart of consultation.  2. client’s birthday/ hour
Explain Feng Shui w/ QMDJ chart w/ QMDJ chart
EZQM_AdvFs

EZ QMDJ Feng Shui is based on house/door-facing

In summary, a QMDJ-FS practitioner must go on-site to measure the house and door-facing to derive the appropriate house QMDJ chart.  Then he explains the Feng Shui conditions of the house in terms of the data shown in the 9-palaces of the chart.  Other than incorrect measurement, the results are replicable by another QMDJ-FS practitioner using the same method.

On the other hand, a QMDJ-DFS practitioner may use the hour chart when the consultation happens OR the birthday hour chart of the client.  Another QMDJ-DFS practitioner is unlikely to replicate the result if using hour chart other than client’s birth chart.

People are pretty mobile in modern societies, especially young people.  My twenty+ years old son has moved 5+ times in the last 6 years.  Could a QMDJ-DFS practitioner use the client’s birth hour again and again when he moves?  Would an on-site measurement is more appropriate?

Assuming a QMDJ-DFS practitioner gets 6 Feng Shui jobs in 3 months.  What is the probability of him getting all 6 jobs “right” or done correctly?  What is the probability of another QMDJ-DFS practitioner replicating these jobs with identical results?  The probability will be much less than hitting the 6-numbers Powerball or Lotto jackpot with 60 balls because here we have 1080 balls (charts)!

Which QMDJ Feng Shui method will you choose?

slot1Note:  A few years ago, an engineering professor Smart (not real name) had purchased “Professional Imperial QMDJ” course from me.  Within a few days, he had used the Imperial QMDJ method to try his luck in a local casino.  He had just played slot machines which requires little or no skill. The email correspondence below are the reports of his casino adventure.  All the names and identifying items are changed.  Below is the continuation from previous blog post– email from Professor Smart a few days after the previous ones.

Dear Ken,

Another good news.  this is the situation:

Today morning (Saturday, 10 August 2013, Wu-Shen Day chart #585, at 9.15 am Ding-Si Hour chart #774), I entered casino towards Southeast direction where xxxx is at the SE on day chart.  Before entering, I waited for 45 minutes outside casino at the area of Northwest (opposite Southeast).  I won USD 1800 including two MINI JACKPOTS at USD 3xx-4xx each).

****note:   I notice that the winning is about the end of the Ding-Si hour.  Is it because the element of hour is YIN?

I also put the the chart of yesterday winning:

Friday 9 August (Ding Wei chart #644) and play at 11:15-13:00 Bing Wu Chart # 763). Waiting at the west area outside casino for one hour.  Then entering casino towards east direction where xxxx is at the east on HOUR CHART). the winning was very fast within 5-10 minutes I got one MAJOR JACKPOT (FaFaFa) usd 2xxx.

****note: The quick winning, is this because of YANG element of the lucky hour?

dragon_dun_sample

Sample Imperial QMDJ Smart Chart

This afternoon, I will play again at 5-7 pm same SE direction (has xxxx at hour chart on SE direction).

Many thanks for your effective QMDJ 🙂

I like to play slot machine, but my problem was I did not know how to control myself and keep playing and lost!!! But with this QMDJ method, I know the lucky hour to get the winning and run away from casino.

Smart

==============

After 6 months, I got the short message below from Professor Smart:

Dear Ken,

Today 27 Feb at 12-2 noon time, I bang casino in xxxxxx (city in another country)  🙂

Was waiting at the west from 11:30-12 noon, then walked to casino and attacked casino.  I played slot machine maximum bet 🙂

Won a lotttt 🙂

I used your QMDJ method, I won a lot last year and this year.

Worth of investment to learn QMDJ 🙂

Thanks!

Smart

========================

I have not shown my answers to Smart’s questions here.  He also had a loss during one of his trips to casino and we had discussed the possible reasons for the loss.  Also I have not listed an important ingredient in the casino beating formula here.  I have not told Smart but he has figured it out himself.  In fact, he had done numerous tests and integrated “Destiny and Luck with Bazi” methods into his winning formula.  I have summarized that formula in one paragraph in the “Professional Imperial QMDJ” discussion list.  If you are observant and search this blog archive, you may figure out this “missing ingredient” easily.

I do not want to promote Imperial QMDJ or any metaphysics method as a speculative or gambling tool.  There are other factors that control one’s wealth attainment capability which are beyond control.

Besides praying for rain and beating the casino, there are many other practical applications of “Imperial QMDJ“, like passing exams, interviews, sales quota, collecting debts, litigation and the like.  It is one of the most practical courses in my inventory.

Dear Ken,

I applied your QMDJ method.

Today 9 August, I sit outside on the west side of casino for one hour. Then at 11:20 am, I walked towards east direction entering casino.  I chose the east corner machine.  I played slot machine only 30 credits per spin.  One credit is usd 0.05.   Within only five minutes, I got jackpot usd 3000. 🙂

Interesting! It has never been very easy to win slot machine.

Ken‘s Reply:

You have your course paid for already!

In the early 90’s, I had published a CD-ROM teaching people how to play slot machines with conventional gambling strategy and software.  It did not work too well.

Slot machine has the worst odds for winning.  Blackjack is better.

When applying QMDJ in casino gambling, the first 5- 10 minutes is the best time to win.  Walk away when you win something meaningful and don’t be greedy.   Then wait for next hour and recharge your QM energy.

Most casinos has voodoo or black magic preventing gamblers winning, esp. those in Asia (and also the native American run casinos in USA).  It seems the “fresh” QM energy at the beginning can crack these black magic temporarily.

Thank you for telling me your winnings.

Ken

This time we discuss application of the “void” concept in Bazi.  It’s void theory is based on the pairing of stems and branches and not borders between two mountains or palaces as in Feng Shui.

void210 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches are the “ABC” of Chinese metaphysics.  So almost every subject like Bazi, QMDJ, date-selection, divination and etc.,  have something on “void branch” due to the imbalance of this “10 stems” vs. “12 branches“.  Two of the branches will be left out with no stems to pair with them.  These two branches are called “void branches“.

There are 60 binomials (pairing of a stem and a branch of the same polarity or gender) categorized into 6 groups or “Xun“.  Each xun has 10 binomials.  Members of each of these 6 groups have the same two void branches.  For example, members of the Jia-zi group ( Jia-zi, Yi-chou, Bing-yin, Ding-mao, Wu-chen, Ji-si, Geng-wu, Xin-wei, Ren-shen, Gui-you) have the same Xu and Hai as their void branches.

Void” means nothing or disappeared.  The effects of a branch sitting on void is usually minimal or discounted by over 50%.

Void branches are classified in terms of:

  • year, month, day and hour branches
  • 10 transformation stars
  • 5-elements
  • “breaking bridge”
  • “horseback”
  • “mutual exchange”
  •  and more

Here we just cover the 10 transformation stars or “10 Gods” on void.  For further info and remedies, please consult my “Destiny and Luck Management with Bazi” courses.  The following table is an excerpt from this “Destiny and Luck Management” course manual.

TRANSFORMATION STARS AND VOID

Another way of looking at void branch is to check the branch in terms of the transformation star it represents.  For example, if the star is zheng-yin (resources) sits on void branch, it stands for lack of help or relationship with mother or older females or lack of or reduced academic progress for that period represented by the pillar.

It is over 10 years since I first taught the San Yuan version of QMDJ in English.  At that time, there were not many versions of QMDJ available, even in Chinese.

Today the QMDJ scene is totally different.  There are numerous versions of QMDJ available, especially in mainland China.  Most are “private label” QMDJ using the teacher’s name as title, like “John Doe QMDJ“.  Some exploit the names of some well-known religions as labels.  Most claim “secret lineage“, “family heirloom” or “recent rediscovery of ancient manuscripts“.

QMDJ1Below are some examples:

  • Minute-pan QM 分家奇门 (10 minute per ju)
  • Psychic QMDJ 通灵奇门遁甲术
  • Flying Jia QMDJ 飞甲奇门
  • Wealth QMDJ 财富奇门
  • Bazi QMDJ 八字奇门
  • Hell Bagua QMDJ 地狱八卦奇门
  • Zhū gě QMDJ 诸葛奇门
  • Maiden QMDJ 玉女奇门
  • Ye‘s Star and Gate QMDJ 叶氏星门转盘奇门
  • Flying Palace Mini-QMDJ 飞宫小奇门
  • Big Dipper 7-stars QMDJ 北斗七星奇门遁甲
  • Yin-pan Daoist QMDJ 阴盘道家奇门
  • Buddhist QMDJ 佛家奇门
  • Huáng Shí Gōng QMDJ  黄石公奇门
  • Numerous private labeled “name QMDJ

Most of these “QMDJ” are copycats of San Yuan QMDJ with minor modifications.  They either change the methods or procedures of deriving the QMDJ chart.  For example,  the “Daoist QMDJ” uses Liu-ren or Plum-flower method to randomize the QMDJ chart selection.  Others simple make minor additions or subtractions of some insignificant QMDJ features to make themselves “unique“.  Most if not all keep the QMDJ engine or contents and interpretation methods intact.  After all, it is too much work to recreate the whole QMDJ engine.

Mainland Chinese QMDJ focuses more on divination and external indicators while Taiwanese QMDJ focuses on date and task selections.

Unfortunately, some of these “mutant” QMDJ have been translated into English and invaded English-speaking countries.

So which one is the real or authentic QMDJ?  It is easy to decide if you have patience.  Wait a few years and you will find most of these “A-goods” QMDJ (“A-货”, Chinese term for counterfeit or fake goods)  will disappear from the cyberspace.  Simply don’t be tempted by all the claims made by these QMDJ marketers.  You may have better luck learning from teachers who have been teaching QMDJ for over 10+ years.  Opportunists who aim for some quick bucks are unlikely to last this long..

Note:  The message below was written in August 2015 for my “Professional Imperial QMDJ” discussion group. I wrote this article after being bombarded with questions about this so-called “QMDJ-XKDG” by my curious students for years.  I have updated it with some new notes here.

Some marketers have marketed a “Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Xuan-Kong-Da-Gua”  (奇门遁甲玄空大卦 QMDJ-XKDG) course a few years ago. You (my students) have asked many questions about this course.

In Chinese metaphysics, there is a fetish of “na-jia” or trying to fit everything into the bagua.  Xuan-Kong-Da-Gua or XKDG itself is an example– artificially fitting 64 hexagrams into the bagua or 8-trigrams by repeating 4 jia-zi (binomials).  XKDG is still not accepted by some Feng Shui schools.

There is also a tendency in Chinese metaphysics circle to stuff 64 hexagrams into existing systems and repackage it as “XXXX-XKDG”.   These marketers often claim that this is no new stuff but a recent “rediscovery” of long-lost ancient manuscript or technique.

During mid-Qing dynasty (around 1700-1800), the government had relaxed the restrictions on the spreading of QMDJ to help countering the increasingly aggressive western power and internal rebellions.  Scholars and amateurs at that time had gone nuts and written many “armchair” books on QMDJ.  “Armchair” means out of imagination or simply using formula mechanically to generate more QMDJ theories.  Some may work and most do not or simply have no empirical testing to backup the “new” theories.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as “QMDJ-XKDG“.  Modern marketers have coined the term “QMDJ-XKDG” because this later day version of QMDJ has somehow “squeezed” 64 hexagrams into the system.  The original author(s) had called this version of QMDJ as “Golden Mirror of Nation-building and Capital setting for 10 Thousands Years Reign” (Aren’t we lucky that Hitler had not gotten a copy?).  I have read the book about this “nation/ capital building” QMDJ. (For around NT$ 300 or US$ 10, you can get the Chinese book on this topic in Taiwan).

Ancient compass with 8 sectors

QMDJ was developed around 200 AD using only 9 palaces or sectors (the rudimentary compass at that time could not do measurement down to individual degree). XKDG requires accuracy down to 360/384 or 0.938 degree (even compass during the1800’s could not be this accurate).  Mixing QMDJ with XKDG together is as funny as putting dinosaurs with humans together like the “One Million Years BC” movie.  QMDJ and XKDG were over 1500 years apart.

Sample “capital-building chart”

The original author of this version of QMDJ had claimed it is for “capital building” and provincial/ city level “huge projects“.  It is not designed for individual house, building or even housing estates though one may use it as “reference“.   If we assume it works as claimed– there are not too many capitals around or huge projects for Feng Shui students to build.  This means only these so-called  “QMDJ-XKDG” teachers make money from selling the course. The students will probably find little or no market for “QMDJ-XKDG” other than selling the course again to others.   It is even worse if the darn thing does not work.

Anyway, the “capital-building chart” looks impressive if not intimidating for the uninitiated.  It is just iterations of some formulas into individual palace.

Commander Nian

Imperial Qing dynasty was no longer exist in China since 1911.  It should be here today if “QMDJ-XKDG” was employed.  And we know from historical texts and Qing Imperial Tombs that Qing emperors were very into Feng Shui and QMDJ.  The Qing military commander Nian Gengyao (年羹尧) was known for using QMDJ in quelling rebellions.

The essence of the question is:  Can QMDJ be scaled up and applied to regional or national level when it was originally designed for small scale or single location application?

QMDJ itself is a very complicated system with over 50 data points and numerous dimensions.  XKDG is not as complicated as QMDJ, but it is not simple either.  Imagine the astronomical number of combinations generated when someone tries to tie these two system together!

Mixing unrelated systems and methods together is like building a QMDJ Frankenstein.  The more variables one adds to a system, the more complicated it becomes, the narrower for its application (like in this case, capital building and huge projects) and the higher probability of something goes wrong.  Isn’t this too much for an individual Feng Shui practitioner to handle?

Just because a book was written a few hundred years ago does not necessarily make its contents valid.  Consumers need to do their crap-detection and hype-filtering before paying for courses based on these “ancient books” or “rediscovery of ancient techniques“.

My 40 years of experience in Chinese metaphysics tells me if someone hypes about a recent “discovery” of an ancient text, technique or family heirloom manuscript in QMDJ, Feng Shui or any topic, the chance of this being crap is pretty high.  If the newly rediscovered “technique” is so amazing and powerful, it should have been utilized extensively like aspirin or sliced bread.  Why it is forgotten or disappeared into the garbage heaps of history long time ago?

You may find QMDJ-ZWDS, XKDG-ZWDS, QMDJ-XKDG-ZWDS, Mega QMDJ-XKDG-ZWDS-4P-Flying-Star courses…. soon in some marketer websites near you.

On April 16,  I was saddened by the news of the South Korean Ferry disaster and wondered if it has any correlation to the metaphysical properties of the date.   I had written the following message to my “Practical Date-Selection Methods” discussion list:

This ferry took off at April 15, around 9 pm.

I ran a date-selection program which gives results from different traditional Chinese date-selection methods.  It is about 50% for and 50% against traveling in April 15 . (see enclosed pix if you can read Chinese).

But out of the numerous results from this Chinese program, three pieces of data are most relevant:

1. The Purple White Star of the day is 5-yellow disaster star and the likely sailing hour is 2-black sickness star bing-xu hour.  Combination of 5-yellow and 2-black is the worst combination in Purple White Star Astrology.

2. One of the month San-sha locations is south. The ferry had sailed towards south from north. Year San-sha is in the north.

3. The date is a Wu-chen month, bing-chen day, sailing hour likely was wu-xu hour (9 pm).  Chen-dragon clashes Xu-dog.  So the hour clashed both the month and day.

I ran Qi-Men-Dun-Jia day pan for the day, south has Shang-gate (hurt) with bing-ren (heaven and earth pans fighting). It is not the worst direction for the chart. SE palace has xin-yi (white tiger) was the worst direction. I wonder if the ferry was off-course to SE.

Anyway, from this unfortunate case, we can see that choosing the right date-selection method is also based on your luck (for choosing the “right” method).  But it seems basic traditional stuff like purple white star and San-sha, 5-yellow and the date breakers, are still your best bet. You don’t really need fancy methods.

Now let’s pray for miracles for the missing passengers in that ferry.
