door

buildingWhen doing Feng Shui audit, the most critical part is figuring out the “facing” and “sitting” of the house because this determines the energy distribution within the property.

“Sitting” is also called “mountain” in Feng Shui terms.  This obviously implying the “back” of the house.  “Facing” is the angle measured based on the “sitting” of the house.

However, how to define “facing” and “sitting” is not this simple.  The topic remains a “hot potato” in Feng Shui circle.

Approaches to facing and sitting:

  • Using door location as facing– the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  • Using mountain or back-support (buildings at the back) to determine facing– door location may not be the opposite side of mountain.
  • Using the “yang-est” side like big open space or ocean or the side with most street traffic as facing– even the door may be at the back of this “facing”.
  • For Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Feng Shui (non-divination type)– door location is very flexible and can be located in any trigram or palace.

For multiple storeys building with multiple tenants:

  1. Using the main entrance of the building as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting— all the units/ apartments will use the same sitting/ facing.
  2. Using the main door location of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  3. Using the “yang-est” side (side with most windows/ balcony) of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite side will be the sitting.
  4. Combination of #1 and 3 with this rule:  For storeys 1 to X (“X” usually is10+) storey, use rule #1 and after “Xth” storey, use rule #2.  The rationale is “Xth” below storeys will be more affected by earth energy and “Xth” above will be affected more by “heaven” or star energy.

There are numerous arguments on which method is more “correct” using how “qi” or energy travels and moves around a house.  For example, the argument against using the yang-est side of a highrise apartment as facing:  qi must be carried by people into the apartment.  People walk through building main entrance, take the elevator and walk to their apartment door.  They do not and cannot walk into their apartment through the balcony high above ground.

I have deliberately skipped the argument on whether “facing” OR “sitting” is more important to keep this short.

Regardless of the arguments, most schools think their method is the best!  This is why if you hire Feng Shui practitioners from different schools, you may get totally opposite readings if facing/ sitting measurement methods are different.

Below is a list of inauspicious Feng Shui images that you do not want to see upon entering one’s house or at the door.stairway

  1. Greet by a wall— may cause obstacles in life and declining luck
  2. See a mirror— deflects away good energies coming into the house and absorbs negative energies into the house
  3. See a toilet—  greeting guest with foul energy; attracting bickering and disharmony among family members
  4. See a stairway—  leaking energy and wealth
  5. See bedroom—  attracting lust and affairs
  6. See the kitchen— causing lawsuits, wealth losses and hot temper
  7. Walks under heavy beam over the door—  disunity among family members and dwindling luck
  8. See the balcony through the door— leaking qi or energy, hurting people and failure to accumulate wealth and keep people in the family
  9. See 3 doors in a straight line—  “sword piercing heart sha” that hurts people and loses wealth
  10. See piles of shoes/ garbage— negative qi suppresses residents’ luck; difficult life for the residents and attracting “mean people” or backstabbers.
  11. See objects like knife, sword, gun, tiger, snake and etc.— unsettling family with bloody events and lawsuits

Most of the above are under traditional Form Feng Shui area.  Consult a Feng Shui practitioner for remedy or take this course:

Note:  The following is an excerpt from “Practical Door Feng Shui for Wealth” video correspondence course.

WHY DOOR IS IMPORTANT?

Door, especially main door, is where people walk in and out, brings in good or bad energies.  Door is like the nose and mouth of a human being— needs nose to breath in fresh air and mouth to eat food to absorb life-sustaining nutrients.round door

Human being is smart, s/he can move his nose to breathe in fresh air and stay away from pungent smells; and goes where clean and good food is available.

However, the main door of a house, a building, an office or factory, is not “smart” or moving by itself area with good energy or qi.  It all depends on the owner’s luck if s/he set the door in a good energy region.

“Auspiciousness and misfortune are attributed to movements”, written in Yi-jing.  Luck, be it good or bad, is due to movement in the right place or wrong place.  To increase your prosperity, you add move movements in areas with good energy (like 8-white earth star during Period 8) and avoid movements in areas with bad energy (like 5-yellow disaster star).

Door is important because it is the linkage between outside and inside energies.  It is also the platform where most movements occur when people walk in or out of the house.  As stated in previous paragraph, movement at any region of the house, depending on the nature of energy in that region (positive vs. negative) will affect the luck of its occupants.

So if main door has good energy, then occupants will enjoy good fortune.  If otherwise, they will suffer misfortune.  We have a popular saying in feng shui, “If the main door of a house worth 1000 pieces of gold, then the house only worth 4 pieces.” door_FS

Here is what Master Chiang Dai Xiong, the famous Xuan Kong master who had written “Water Dragon Classic”, commented about the significance of door:

Main door controls the prosperity and future of a family.”

“Bedroom door controls the lives of a couple.”

“You see effects after modifying a door.”

Door is the skeleton of a house and paths are the tendons. Both should be auspicious to bring prosperity.  If door is auspicious but paths are not, then the consequences are still negative.”

The basic principle of door placement is simple:  put the main door in region with current timely water star (like 8 during Period 8) with Flying Star or put it in a Period 8 (for current period) gua line.

Paths” means the roads leading to doors. Road should bring in “timely” or auspicious qi or energy of current Period, just like the door.

Before we start different theories of door placement, ……………..

The following is taken from Hermit Bok Hok Ming’s book, “22 methods to energize (wang) your house and neutralize negative energies (sha)”. Mr. Bok has written over 40 Feng Shui books in Hong Kong. If he were the Feng Shui course marketing folks in the west, he would probably somehow be marketed as “great great supreme master”. Calling himself “hermit” shows his modesty or humility. He is not even over 50 years old. His grand father was a Feng Shui practitioner.

This junior version of Castle Gate method is derived from Master Jiang Da Xiong’s “Do Ti Bao Jao Classic”. Castle Gate method is used to energize (wang) house fortune. This method is considered “advanced” Feng Shui technique. The “junior” version is the first part of the castle gate theory, which can be easily grasped by any idiot. The second part is not for idiot though.

In residential Feng Shui, we can use Castle Gate method to place some Feng Shui items to energize a house.

Here are some examples of such items:
1. Aquarium or water items with moving water or fishes
2. Pendulum clocks — movement of pendulum
3. TV– sound, electric current and magnetic power
4. Hi-Fi stereo– sound, electric current and magnetic power
5. Air-conditioner– sound, electric current, air current and magnetic power
6. Electric fan– electric current, air current and magnetic power

Essentially, anything that move will energize the house, provided it is placed in the right place.

By definition, castle gate is the two sides of the facing direction.

To understand the logic of this method, you need to know the former heaven bagua (He Tu).

In He Tu, there are 5 pairs of numbers, which represents directions and one of the 5 elements.

They are:

North 1 NW 6 (represents water as a pair)
SW 2 W 7 ( fire )
East 3 NE 8 ( wood )
SE 4 S 9 ( metal )
center5 10 ( earth, not used)

According to Castle Gate theory, the auspicious direction of a building is derived from the facing direction. And the direction that “pairs” with the facing direction according to He Tu is the auspicious direction for Castle Gate.

You may already have figured out the auspicious location for placing Feng Shui items for your
own house.

Note: The following blog was written on Dec. 20, 2003

According to generic or Shen's Flying Star, one way to
upgrade P7 houses to P8 is relocating door to a "wang"
position (palace with 8 or 9 water star).

It is correct to a certain extent.

Try this example:

ren mountain, bing facing house with bing door

(ms, ts, ws)

S
263 727 945
154 372 599
618 836 481

Bing door was a "wang" door during P7. So the logical
choice will be relocate your door to Gen palace with
8ws, is it?

If you do so, you may have over 50% chance of causing
severe damages to your clients, including loss of life
and wealth.

I'll explain this in my "P8 Feng Shui Toolkit"
seminiar.

But in case you can't come for any reason, here is the
hint-- look at the 24 mountains.
