bagua

When one walks into a house, one could easily predict if the residents have health problems or not.  It sounds like magic but it is really simple after you have read this article.

In Feng Shui, a house can also represent the body of the residents.  A house is divided into 8 sectors along the Bagua or 8-trigrams theory.  Each sector represents certain family member and organ.  For example, northwest or Qian sector represents the father or oldest male of the house.  It also represents the head or lungs in a body.

We keep it simple here by focusing on the location of bathroom (toilet) and kitchen locations and its effect on the health and other aspects of the residents.

KITCHEN/ TOILET LOCATION AND RESIDENT HEALTH

According to Yi-Jing (“Book of Changes”), “Fortune and misfortune are attributable to movement.”.  Kitchen and toilet have the most traffic or movements within a house.  So its location has significant effects on the well-being of the residents.

If kitchen or toilet is in the northwest side of a house, the oldest male or father of the house will have less luck or someone has headache or lung problem.  Northwest is the Qian trigram location and stands for father.

If kitchen or toilet is in the southwest side of a house, the oldest female or mother of the house is likely a weakling or someone has spleen or  stomach problems.  Southwest is the Kun trigram location and stands for mother.

If kitchen or toilet is in the east side of a house, the eldest son or 40+ years old male of the house is likely has mental problem or someone has liver or gallbladder problems.  Southwest is the Zhen trigram location and stands for eldest son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the southeast side of a house, the eldest daughter or 40+ years old female of the house may lack luck or someone has liver or gallbladder problems.  Southeast is the Xun trigram location and stands for eldest daughter.

If kitchen or toilet is in the north side of a house, the middle son or middle-age   male  of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has kidney or urological problems.  Southwest is the Kan trigram location and stands for middle son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the south side of a house, the middle daughter or middle-age female of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has heart or blood vessels problems.  South  is the Li  trigram location and stands for middle daughter.

If kitchen or toilet is in the northeast side of a house, the youngest son or young or teenage male of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has stomach or spleen problems.  Southwest is the Gen trigram location and stands for youngest son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the west side of a house, the youngest daughter or young or teenage female of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has respiratory problems.  Southwest is the Dui trigram location and stands for youngest daughter.

TOILET LOCATION,  ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND RELATIONSHIP

Toilet location may also affect the academic performance of your children.  Make sure the location representing your kid has no toilet.  Another precaution is the 4-academic star location of your house should have no toilet on it or the academic performance of the residents suffer.

For women live in a house with toilet in Qian (NW) sector of the house, they are likely have problem keeping a man in the house or the man has weak character and/or does not want to stay home.

In 2011, I wrote about the 1000+ years mystery of “middle-heaven bagua” that is supposedly the human level of bagua.

http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2011/09/in-search-of-human-bagua-i.html

http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2011/09/in-search-of-human-bagua-ii.html

A German reader wrote me about this middle-heaven bagua.  But I have a policy of not answering emails from people that I do not know (except placing course orders).  But he is so persistent, so I post his questions here for anyone interested to answer.  Other than correcting some minor misspellings, the following is taken verbatim from his email.

Dear Master Lai,

I am a private researcher of yjing the last 20 years. Because of studying a variety of books with contrary views and theories – I am lost and frustrated over the years.

When I read your blog and statements on the web, I got the impression, that you really have the fundamental plain true basics.

I would be pleased and thankful  for your help.

My main questions are:

1.  Is the houtian superpositioned on the xiantian bagua or the other way round to generate the 64 hexagrams?

2. How come the sixiang into being ? Through the middle line of a trigram, combined from earlier and later bagua, or through luoshu / hetu number grid.  Is sixiang a combination from both arrangements? You spoke of a middle gua?! Or is sixiang build from the other /uppermost bagua?

Does young yang stand in the east with lower line yin and upper yang or is it the other way round. Same for young yin in the west?

3. How does the nine palaces (eight houses) are connected in generating the 64 hexagrams?

I would be so happy to get your reply and support.

Best regards from Germany,

xxxxxxx

PS:  Ken’s comment:  These are profound questions good enough for a few PhD dissertations.

fireNorthwest or Qian direction is the “heaven” or ruler direction in “post-heaven” Bagua.  Hence Qian is also known as “heaven’s gate” in Feng Shui.

Generally speaking, when a kitchen or stove is located in the NW or Qian sector of a house, it has “fire burning heaven’s gate” Feng Shui problem.

Qian is metal in nature.  It stands for the head, respiratory system, career and oldest male in the house. With “fire burning heaven’s gate” Feng Shui, the residents of this house are likely to suffer head injuries/ sickness, mental illness, respiratory problem, rebellious children, lung or brain cancer, fire and career problems.  The oldest male is the likely victim though young girl and boy can also suffer.

There are more than one type of “fire burning heaven’s gate

TYPES OF “FIRE BURNING HEAVEN’S GATE”

1.  Xuan Kong Flying Star versions:

  • a.  when 9-purple star flies to NW (Qian palace)
  • b.  when 6-white metal star flies to the south (Li Palace)

2.   Bazhai or 8-Mansions Feng Shui version:

  • —  when Wu-gui (5-ghosts, also known as Lian-zhen star, fire in nature) lands on NW.  For example, a house with Mao (East) sitting and You-facing (West).

3.  General Feng Shui versions:

  • a.  when kitchen, stove, fridge, TV, computer or electronic items  indoor OR outdoor tall objects like power tower, tall building, chimney….etc, are located in NW sector
  • b.  when kitchen, stove, fridge, TV, computer or electronic items  indoor OR outdoor tall objects like power tower, tall building, chimney….etc, are located in the south sector.

How do you fix this “fire burning heaven’s gate” problem?  Obviously, move the kitchen or related hot items out of NW or the south.

“Ken, how about if we cannot relocate the kitchen or these objects, especially the outdoor ones?”

There are remedies and simple fixes for it that cost little or almost next to nothing.  Simply consult a Feng Shui professional or your teacher.

In Feng Shui, every major direction represents a member of the family.  Please check the following diagram taken from my “Practical Door Feng Shui for Wealth” course manual:

bagua people

Garage can holds wastes and emits negative qi or energy. The location where you put your garbage can will have serious consequence for the family member represented by that location.  For example, if the garbage can is put in NW location, the oldest male (usually the father, the major breadwinner) may suffer bad luck like tarnished reputation, demotion, business or career failure and the like.  Same problems for the mother of the house if the garbage can is put in SW location.trashcanc

In business, if the garbage can is in the NW location, the owner will not be respected by the subordinates and likely to fail.  NW or Qian location represents the head or owner of a business or office.

I know you may have a problem because every direction represents the location for a family member– you may not want to “sacrifice” anyone by putting the garbage can in that location.

Today is your lucky day– below is the top Feng Shui secret of where to put your garbage can without hurting anyone.

In Feng Shui and BaziChen (dragon),  Xu (dog),  Chou (ox) and  Wei (ram) locations or mountains are called “tombs 墓” or “storages 仓库”.  These are the locations to put your garbage can without turning your family member into “garbage“.

4_tombs

Green arrows point to the “storage locations”

WHERE TO PUT GARBAGE CANJ1301_Floor_Plan

How to find the 4-storages sectors?

  1. Draw a proportional floorplan of your house and put a protractor over the center of the plan.
  2. Mark the degrees around the floorplan
  3. Locate the directions below:
  • Chen mountain (SE1): 112.5- 127.5 degree
  • Xu mountain (NW1): 292.5- 307.5 degree
  • Chou mountain (NE1): 22.5- 27.5 degree
  • Wei mountain (SW1): 202.5- 217.5 degree

In Feng Shui, negative energy will have have minimal effect when you cannot see and smell it.  Hence, keeping the small waste baskets inside your house or business clean/ covered (if there is organic waste) and inconspicuous is OK too.

A metaphysics marketing website has done an email blitz promoting the “month of triple afflictions” as if it is worse than the upcoming 2012 end of the world prophecy.  Some people are scared, especially when they find out that there is a fourth affliction.

The fourth affliction is the damage to your wallet if you follow the suggestions of this website to purchase US$2000 or more worth of mantra plague, talisman pendant, pagoda and the like to fix the first three afflictions.

Should we be very afraid?  Should we lose any sleep thinking about these “triple afflictions“? Should we shell out 2 grands to fix the problem?

TRIPLE AFFLICTIONS EXPOSED
1.  Year and month pillar fan-yin or clashing
This mean the year energy and month energy battling each other.  Current year is metal-tiger (Geng-yin) and month is wood-monkey (Jia-shen, the 7th lunar or solar month) .  This is primarily fighting between metal and wood energies– a sign for more traffic accidents and injuries by metal objects.  A simple cure is to drive careful and avoid traveling. You may do spiritual cure by carrying a relic, rosary, cross, talisman and the like. This 7th lunar month starts from August 10 to Sept. 7 (Aug. 7- Sept.7 for solar month) .

2.   5-yellow star sits in the center palace
When 5-yellow star returns to the center palace, it is called “return to the original position of the star’s palace” or 回宫歸位 huí gōng guī wèi. It is like a re-initialization in computer jargons or return to the original formation of the post-heaven bagua. This happens once every 9 months!  Will a star make havoc in its own backyard?  This condition at most makes energy stagnant or not moving. Every star returns to its hometown and takes it easy for one month.

3.  The 7th lunar month is ghost month
The idea of “ghost month” is largely a Daoist conception or Chinese belief. If you do not believe in it or have never heard about it, it will have little or no effect on you.   It is just like Chinese New Year is no big deal to westerners but is celebrated by Chinese.  If you are Chinese or scared, you can print out the talisman picture in this blog, activate it with a donation to your local temple, church, foodshelf or simply doing an act of kindness, and carry it around with you.  You may also burn some joss papers and make offerings to hungry ghosts if you want to.

Most people (except a small group list below) should not worry about this so-called “triple afflictions“, especially for those who are righteous and have done nothing “bad” or evil. By the law of attraction, negative energies and entities will be attracted to people with negative energies.

DATES AND TIME THAT YOU SHOULD WORRY!
Year pillar and month pillar clash may cause more “concern” to people with snake (si) animal sign or people with snake day branch in their birth charts.  These people are more “accident-prone” than the others due to the formation of “3-penalties” (yin-si-shen) with the year and month pillar. Simple fix is to minimize traveling or driving within this month (please refer to #1 above).

For everyone, within the 7th lunar month, avoid using snake or si hour (9:00- 10:59) to make major decisions and traveling. This hour forms a 3-penalty with year and month pillar EVERYDAY for this lunar month.

The following days are especially prone to accident regardless of the hour(especially for people with monkey, tiger and snake animal signs):

August 11 (gui-si)
August 23 (yi-si)
September 4 (ding-si)

During these 3 days, 3:00-4:59, 9:00- 10:59 and 15:00- 16:59 are the worst hours. People with tiger, snake or monkey signs will be better off to take a day off and stay home if possible. If not, be extra vigilant when driving and traveling. You may do spiritual cure by carrying a relic, rosary, cross, talisman and the like. The most powerful remedies are doing charity works like blood, food and money donations to the poor and needy.

Do you still want to spend US$2000 or more to purchase the “cures“?

I have read an interesting story from a Chinese website.  A factory in a major Chinese city has imported a bar soap packaging production line.  The line has rampant problems of not putting the soap into the box.  The factory owner had found a PhD in automation to solve this empty-box problem.

The PhD in turn had recruited another 10+ people to reseach the problem.  They finally have integrated micro-electronics, X-ray and mechanical technology to design a system to tackle the empty-box problem.  This costs the factory over half-million dollars.

When packaged soap box without the bar inside passing through the sensors of this system, a mechanical hand will push the box out of the moving belt.

Another factory located in a small town in southern China has imported the same bar soap packaging line. This factory is staffed mostly by migrant workers from the countryside.

The factory owner was very agitated when discovering the empty-box problem.  He grabbed a migrant worker out of the production line and yelled, “Solve this f___ing problem for me or your ass is on the line!”

This migrant worker had found a solution quickly– he put up an electric fan, set it to highest blowing speed at the end of production.  Empty boxes will be blown away when coming.   The fan costs less than $200.

Hi Ken,  does this soap packaging story has anything to do with Feng Shui or Chinese metaphysics?”

Almost every trade can learn something from this story.  Here are some of the lessons:

1. There are many solutions to the same problem
2. Not the “latest and greatest” answer or technology are the best solution or cost-effective.
3. Simple solution that does the same thing is better than complicated solution
4. PhDs are not necessarily smarter than you, but for sure they cost you more

In Feng Shui, “the latest and greatest” are likely be the ones that did not work too well in distant past and got recycled as the latest secret recently “released”.

Some Feng Shui problems can be solved by simple 5-element adjustments, forms (Feng Shui) or even using bagua theory.  Instead,  some people hire “famous” or expensive Feng Shui masters who likely will turn your house upside down with major remodeling or tilt your doors.

Below is taken from a message from my “4P Bootcamp” discussion list.

Hi Ken and others,

Student Comment: It appears that feng shui has an influence at least on people’s personality. I observed people living in different areas of the country or world behave differently.

Ken: Yes, there are regional difference in macro Feng Shui which affect not only the personality but also physical appearance of the people there. For example, people born in China’s Soo Zhou and Hang Zhou regions, where water and mountains are pretty, tend to be physically attractive too, not to mention there are many famous scholars and poets born in those areas in the past thousand years or so.

Then we have micro level Feng Shui that affect individual households. From my experience, I found that personal luck is likely to synchronize with Feng Shui . I told people if they feel their current luck is great, then fire the Feng Shui master and just grab a house. It will have good Feng Shui . But if you feel your current luck is low, you need to find a Feng Shui guy to help you.

Some people intentionally or unintentionally overblow the power of Feng Shui. Feng Shui’s basic premise is to live in harmony with nature. Everything else are just by-products. It does not intend to make you rich, to have good relationship, to beat recession or not getting sick. Even His Holiness Delai Lama gets sick from time to time and consults a doctor. The richest man in the world is not a Feng Shui master. In fact, many famous Feng Shui masters in history died poor. What did these mean? One’s fate or destiny is more important than Feng Shui, not to mention personal cultivation and behaviors that also affect one’s karma and luck.

Student Comment: My question is: does Feng Shui influence one’s luck?

Ken: Yes, a Hong Kong sifu of mine had found that people with good Feng Shui , when they have traffic accident, their injury will be minimized or not severe. Another study in Taiwan about air-crash victims showed that their house Feng Shui tend to have problem like void line (no qi or energy coming into the house).

So it seems that the relationship between Feng Shui and 4-Pillars is like this: if personal luck is bad, good Feng Shui will mitigate the negative effect. If one has good luck but his house Feng Shui is bad, the negative effect will not be as severe or mitigated. With bad personal luck and bad Feng Shui — your life will be very challenging.

There are people who do not believe in San-sha (3-killings) and 5-yellow and dug in those areas and bragged about nothing negative happen. It did not happen YET because their current luck is probably on the high side.

The negative effect may come a few years later— when your luck is low! Few people can enjoy good luck all the time.

Some years ago Taiwan’s China Airline had a crash with many of its executives killed on-board. Taiwan Feng Shui masters had traced back that the company had violated San Sha a few years ago when they built their new headquarters.

Student Comment: For example,  why there are more countries that suffer poverty, famine, and war than developed nations?

Ken: This has to do with the “earth luck” of those regions. It switches according to the lao-shu (post-heaven bagua) theoretically. For example, now is Period 8 and the auspicious region will be NE of any country or NE of the world.

Student Comment: Does it mean good 4P charts and bad charts are not evenly distributed around the world?

Ken: There is no study done about the distribution of good and bad 4P charts. There are about a few hundred babies born every minute around the world with the same 4P charts. Of course, they will not have same luck and life experience. Different geography and birth environments (including social class background) will affect people with same 4P chart differently.

There is a 4P story about two babies born at the same time– one was born on a ship and another born in the shop of a blacksmith. The one born on water became a major government official while the blacksmith’s son become a blacksmith. Then someone move this blacksmith son to the capital and study. He became an official too.

Their natal chart liked water. Temperature adjustment in a 4P chart is very important. Very often, the difference between a rich man and a very rich man is the latter has temperature adjustment.

Student Comment: Majority of people in a 3rd world country are born with bad charts, or the ones with good charts managed to leave the country, or the ones born with good charts will have bad luck as well if they live in a city/country with bad Feng Shui?

Ken: Everything is relative. What’s considered “poor” here may sound like paradise in some other countries. The “poor” in USA still have cable TV and steady supply of food– compare this lifestyle to some third world poor, it is not bad at all. I don’t think majority of people in third world countries born with bad charts, just the ones with “good” charts may suffer less.

Personally I think your “yun” or luck periods are more important than your Bazi natal chart and Feng Shui . When you are in good luck period, you can pick a house with good Feng Shui with your eyes blindfolded.

To conclude, 4P interacts with Feng Shui , geography (hot or cold climate), birth environments, your personal choices and perhaps, your past lives too (if you believe in Buddhism).

Student Comment:
I ask this because people are always looking to change aspects of their lives i.e.) better job opportunities, less stressful life, etc. by moving to a different area. But is it really helpful?

Ken: Yes, if your chart dislikes fire and you live in say, Malaysia (hot area), your luck will be better if you move to Minnesota (cold place). I have tested this out myself!
